Link Governor Questions Support Pack

🔄 Updated for 2026

Effective link governors ask strong questions and this pack gives them the tools to do exactly that. Each set of structured questions supports a different link governor role, giving governors a practical starting point for exploring their area in depth, collaborating meaningfully with school leaders and fulfilling their strategic responsibilities with confidence. Whether you're supporting new governors or strengthening the skills of your board, these resources help shift governors' questions from operational to genuinely strategic.

You'll get:

☑️ Attendance and Behaviour – structured questions to support governors in exploring attendance systems, behaviour culture, policies and practice

☑️ Curriculum, Early Reading and EYFS – questions covering curriculum intent, implementation and impact, early reading and phonics, and EYFS provision

☑️ Safeguarding, SEND and Inclusion – questions across safeguarding, SEND, equality and accessibility, and pupil premium and disadvantaged pupils

☑️ Finance, GDPR and Health and Safety – questions to support governors in evaluating financial management, data protection and H&S compliance

☑️ Staff, Pupil and Community Wellbeing – questions to help governors explore staff workload and wellbeing provision across the school

All templates are fully editable so you can adapt them to reflect your school's context and needs.

👉 To support a specific link governor role, these questions are also available in our individual link governor support packs. These packs include the relevant questions plus a report to governor templates and a role and responsibilities document.

This pack is designed to support effective governance in schools. It contains thirteen editable audit templates (MS Word .docx format); each one will support the relevant link governor or trustee and school leaders to work together and evaluate their setting's current position. This allows further opportunities for growth to be identified as well as enabling the link governor or local board member to gain a deeper understanding about the school's current position, which can then help to inform future strategic decisions that the governing board makes.

Each set of questions could also be used by a school leader and then shared with the relevant link governor afterwards; a helpful section on triangulating evidence is included to support this approach. Once the questions complete, an action plan template is provided, allowing you to document your next steps.

The templates included in this pack allow you to audit the following areas:

  1. Attendance
  2. Behaviour
  3. Curriculum
  4. Early Reading and Phonics
  5. EYFS
  6. Equality and Accessibility
  7. Finance
  8. GDPR and Data Protection
  9. Health and Safety
  10. Pupil Premium and Disadvantaged Pupils
  11. Safeguarding
  12. SEND and Inclusion
  13. Staff Workload and Wellbeing

Each set of governor questions is designed to support long-term strategic collaboration between school leaders and governors. This allows for a full picture to be built (meaning governors are prepared to speak with Ofsted inspectors when necessary) and ensuring that the governing board fulfils its core functions linked to the educational performance of the school and the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.

Anyone who wants to support their governors to be more proactive, effective and strategically involved (rather than operationally) will find this pack extremely useful. The thirteen templates are consistent in nature, allowing headteachers, trust leaders, governance professionals, chairs of governors or anyone else involved in building effective governance in school to ensure the governors, local board members and/or trustees have a strong grip on the school's strengths and areas for development.

This link governor questions resource pack will help schools answer key questions such as:

  • What questions should link governors ask?
  • How can governors effectively evaluate the school’s provision?
  • How can governors collaborate with school leaders to identify areas for improvement and ensure the best outcomes for pupils?

You may find our other governance resources helpful too!

These question documents are also available in individual link governor support packs. These packs include the relevant set of questions plus a report to governor templates and a role and responsibilities document. You can find these link governor support packs here.
