This adaptable pack is designed to support the effective governance of the curriculum in schools. It contains the following six comprehensive resources:

  1. Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact Questions for Governors and Trustees - This document is designed to allow collaboration between the curriculum governor and the key staff members in school, such as the curriculum or quality of education lead, headteacher or SLT member(s) with responsibility for curriculum. Containing 14 pages of questions, it helps governors and school leaders to evaluate their setting's current position, which allows further opportunities for growth to be identified as well as enabling the curriculum link governor or trustee to gain a deeper understanding about the school's current position. The audit could also be used by a school leader and then shared with the curriculum link governor afterwards; a helpful section on triangulating evidence is also included to support this approach. Once the audit is complete, an action plan template is provided, allowing you to document your next steps.
  2. EYFS Audit Questions for Governors and Trustees - Mirroring the curriculum intent, implementation and impact questions but focusing on the EYFS, this audit allows the curriculum governor to work with the relevant school leader, such as the early years lead, to develop a deeper understanding of the school's current strengths and areas of development for their EYFS children.
  3. Early Reading and Phonics Questions for Governors and Trustees - Like the previous two sets of questions, this document allows curriculum link governors and those responsible for early reading and phonics to evaluate the school's current position. This could be completed in conjunction with an early years audit to get a fuller picture of what school is like for pupils in the first stages of their education journey.
  4. Subject Report to Governors - This document is designed to support school leaders, subject leaders and the curriculum link governor to report to their full governing board on particular subject areas, such as those that are part of the school improvement plan. It contains sections for both subject data and commentary about the school's current position, giving all school governors insight. It can also be reused for multiple subjects.
  5. EYFS Report to Governors - Like the subject report to governors, this document allows the EYFS lead and the curriculum link governor to work together and report the current picture of the school's early years' provision to the full governing board.
  6. Curriculum Link Governor Role and Responsibilities - This document outlines the key parts of a curriculum governor's role and what areas of school governance they are responsible for. It can be used as-is or amended to reflect what your school needs from its curriculum link governor. Either way, it's a helpful document that allows a new curriculum governor to understand what they need to do.

The resources in this pack are designed to support long-term strategic collaboration between school leaders and the curriculum link governor, allowing for a full picture to be built and ensuring strong outcomes, attainment and progress for all pupils.

A curriculum link governor - whether new to role or experienced but seeking further support - will find this pack extremely useful.

It will also support headteachers, trust leaders, governance professionals, chairs of governors or anyone else involved in building effective governance in school. School leaders or another governor can use the pack and its templates to provide a new or struggling curriculum link governor with the support they need.

This curriculum governor resource pack will help schools answer key questions such as:

  • What are a curriculum governor’s roles and responsibilities?
  • How can curriculum governors effectively evaluate the school’s curriculum and support its development?
  • What questions should curriculum governors ask during audits?
  • What data and insights should be included in a subject report to the full governing board?
  • How can governors collaborate with school leaders to identify areas for improvement and ensure the best outcomes for pupils?

It'll also provide you with the structure and tools that curriculum governors need to understand, fulfil and excel in their role.
