What's in this Enrichment Benchmarks – Evidence and Narrative Pack?

This pack gives you a clear, step-by-step way to review your school's enrichment offer against the DfE's eight enrichment benchmarks, rate your current provision, write the narrative summaries that explain it and turn any gaps into an owned plan of action. It's built around the DfE's Enrichment Framework for Schools and Colleges (June 2026) and reflects how Ofsted's school inspection toolkit has referred to the framework since September 2026, within the personal development and wellbeing evaluation area.

You'll get:

The guide

☑️ Enrichment Benchmarks – Evidence and Narrative Guidance (35-page PDF) – Each of the eight benchmarks gets its own walkthrough covering what it means, what it might look like in practice, what inspectors might explore and the evidence to have ready, followed by a 1 to 4 rating guide and a checkpoint with an example from a fictional school. Before that, the guide explains what enrichment is, how the DfE's five categories fit together and how Ofsted looks at it, and it closes with practical advice on planning, timetabling and building a more inclusive programme.

Planning and review templates

☑️ Enrichment Benchmark Ratings and Action Plan – All eight ratings and narrative summaries come together in one place, and anything rated 1 or 2 becomes a specific action with an owner and a review date.

☑️ Enrichment Strategy and Category Mapping Template – Your current provision sits alongside the five DfE categories and your school development priorities, so any gaps are immediately visible.

☑️ Core Offer Mapping Template – Guaranteed experiences for every pupil are plotted by year group next to your optional clubs, so breadth doesn't rest on which activities pupils happen to choose.

☑️ Annual Enrichment Review Cycle Template – A feedback collection calendar, a review meeting agenda and a "You Said, We Listened" template keep the annual cycle running smoothly and close the loop with families.

Governance and policy templates

☑️ Enrichment Policy – The categories you offer, where accountability sits and the safeguarding expectations for external providers are set out in one formal document, so leaders and governors aren't working from an informal understanding.

☑️ Enrichment Briefing for SLT and Governors – Governors get an introduction to the enrichment framework and the questions they should be asking about strategic oversight.

Listening, tracking and evidence templates

☑️ Enrichment Pupil, Parent and Staff Surveys – Ready-made questionnaires for all three groups are built specifically around enrichment, so voice and choice are captured properly and you can check that families know what's on and feel that taking part is recognised.

☑️ Enrichment Participation Tracking Template – Participation is logged and reviewed by group, such as SEND, pupil premium, young carer or attendance status, so you have the data to hand rather than pulling it together under pressure.

☑️ Enrichment Outcomes and Data Tracking Template – You name your intended outcomes, map each one to data you already collect and review the impact each term, so evidencing impact becomes a continuous cycle.

☑️ Enrichment Accessibility and Barriers Tracker – Specific barriers such as cost, transport, timing or adapted equipment are logged alongside what was done about each one, so removing barriers becomes a tracked action rather than a one-off conversation.

Communication and partnership templates

☑️ Enrichment Communication and Celebration Toolkit – Adaptable newsletter copy, a website page template, a certificate template and a pupil enrichment passport mean you're not starting from scratch.

☑️ External Partner Directory and Due Diligence – Every partner is logged in one directory, with a safeguarding checklist covering on-site and off-site delivery, a partner agreement and a signposting log for opportunities beyond your own offer.

The guide is a PDF and the 12 templates are editable Word documents supplied in a ZIP. All templates are fully editable so you can adapt them for your school's specific context.

Who should use this Enrichment Benchmarks – Evidence and Narrative Guidance Pack?

This pack is designed for headteachers, deputy heads and senior leaders with responsibility for personal development and wellbeing, and for enrichment leads who want a clear way to review their enrichment offer and show what it achieves. It's particularly valuable if you're looking at your provision against the DfE's enrichment framework for the first time, if enrichment currently sits with one enthusiastic member of staff rather than in your development plan, or if you have a long list of clubs but little evidence of who takes part or what difference it makes.

It's equally useful for school business managers coordinating clubs, charges and external providers, governors with oversight of personal development, SENDCos and pupil premium leads tracking participation for the pupils most at risk of missing out and trust central teams supporting more than one school. It's essential wherever enrichment has grown organically over the years and now needs a clearer structure, a new enrichment lead is taking on the role or governors have started asking what enrichment is achieving.

The pack is written for primary, secondary (including those with a sixth form), special (any phase) and alternative provision settings in England. Please note, the DfE's framework also covers further education, which this pack isn't written for.

How can this pack help school leaders review and evidence their enrichment offer?

This comprehensive pack helps you tackle the most common challenges leaders face when reviewing, strengthening and evidencing enrichment against the DfE's framework.

"What is the DfE Enrichment Framework and do we have to follow it?" The Enrichment Framework for Schools and Colleges, published by the DfE in June 2026, is non-statutory guidance built around five categories of enrichment and eight benchmarks. You aren't legally required to follow it, but Ofsted's toolkit has referred to it since September 2026. The Introduction to Enrichment section sets out the categories and the benchmarks at a glance, so you know what the framework is asking of you before you begin.

"How does Ofsted look at enrichment?" Enrichment isn't inspected as a stand-alone area. It sits within personal development and wellbeing, where inspectors look for purposeful and varied enrichment, equal access for all pupils and leaders who track participation. The guide explains this and sets out what inspectors might explore for each benchmark. Ofsted doesn't need leaders to produce documents specifically for an inspection, so the pack is designed for your own improvement work and helps you describe your offer clearly using what you already have.

"How do I review our enrichment offer against the eight benchmarks?" Every benchmark follows the same four steps: gather your evidence, rate yourself from 1 (identifying) to 4 (sustaining and stretching), write a checkpoint narrative and add your rating to the Enrichment Benchmark Ratings and Action Plan. Anything rated 1 or 2 becomes a specific action with an owner and a review date.

"How do I write a narrative summary of our enrichment provision?" Each benchmark ends with a checkpoint box and an example from a fictional school, so you can see the level of detail to aim for. You can type straight into the PDF or use the space in the Enrichment Benchmark Ratings and Action Plan.

"How do I check our enrichment offer covers all five categories?" The Enrichment Strategy and Category Mapping Template lays your provision against civic engagement, arts and culture, nature, outdoors and adventure, sport and physical activity and developing wider life and future skills, so gaps are immediately visible. The Core Offer Mapping Template then shows what every pupil is guaranteed by year group, and the guide explains how to build provision into the school day through lunchtime slots, tutor time or timetabled sessions.

"How do I track who is and isn't taking part in enrichment?" The Enrichment Participation Tracking Template logs participation by pupil premium, SEND, young carer and attendance status, while the Enrichment Accessibility and Barriers Tracker records barriers such as cost, transport or timing and what was done about each one. The guide also helps you spot patterns, talk to the pupils and families who aren't engaging and make reasonable adjustments.

"How can I show the impact of enrichment on pupils?" Benchmark 7 is the one many schools find hardest, so the guide helps you name the outcomes you expect, such as wellbeing, belonging, attendance and skill development. The Enrichment Outcomes and Data Tracking Template then maps each one to data you already hold, including attendance records, behaviour points and existing wellbeing surveys.

"What do governors need to know about enrichment?" The Enrichment Briefing for SLT and Governors introduces the framework and sets out the questions governors should be asking about strategic oversight, while the Enrichment Policy puts accountability for enrichment into one formal document.

"How do I check that external providers of clubs and activities are safe?" Benchmark 6 carries the clearest safeguarding weight of the eight, as it's the one place where people outside your normal staff structure work directly with pupils. The External Partner Directory and Due Diligence template gives you a log of every partner, a safeguarding checklist for on-site and off-site delivery, a partner agreement and a signposting log.

"How do I tell families about our enrichment offer and celebrate taking part?" The Enrichment Communication and Celebration Toolkit provides adaptable newsletter copy, a website page template, a certificate template and a pupil enrichment passport, while the Enrichment Pupil, Parent and Staff Surveys check that families know what's on and feel that participation is recognised.
