What’s in this Developing Teaching Audit Pack?

Developing high-quality teaching and supporting staff development calls for clear, structured evaluation. This pack provides original, editable tools to help leadership teams examine teaching practice in depth, identify effective approaches and plan targeted improvements with confidence. Inside, you’ll find:

☑️ A 27-page Developing Teaching Audit document

Your core evaluation tool, with reflective prompts and structured questions across eight key areas of teaching and professional growth. Includes space to note strengths, pinpoint development needs and draw together supporting evidence. The eight areas are:

  • Strategic leadership of teaching
  • Subject and phase expertise in teaching
  • Teaching practice and pedagogy
  • Adaptive teaching and meeting diverse needs
  • Assessment and feedback to inform teaching
  • Professional development and continuous improvement
  • Teaching culture, collaboration and reflective practice
  • Evaluating impact and sustaining improvement

Work through each section with colleagues to build a thorough, realistic understanding of your teaching provision.

☑️ Action plan template

Helps you set out priorities clearly and agree practical next steps.

☑️ Teacher development document checklist

Identifies the teaching, CPD and curriculum documents that will strengthen your audit.

☑️ Question bank

Editable questions to support evidence gathering from staff, pupils, parents/carers and governors.

☑️ One-page summary template

Summarises your findings for easy sharing with SLT, governors or trust leaders.

☑️ PDF guidance: Auditing your School's Provision

An 11-page guide with practical tips for planning and carrying out effective audits, including how to involve others. Print-friendly version included.

All resources come in editable Word format, apart from the PDF guide. A free update will follow when the final Ofsted framework is published in September.

Who should use this developing teaching audit?

Improving teaching quality is rarely a solo task. This audit pack is for leadership teams with responsibility for developing staff expertise and ensuring strong, consistent teaching across the school. It will be most useful for headteachers, deputies, SLT members, CPD leads, curriculum leaders and those who line manage teaching staff, such as phase or department leads.

Rather than a checklist for one person, it’s designed for collaborative use – helping you bring together insights from different roles, explore what’s working well and decide where teaching practice could improve further.

If you’re planning professional development, leading teaching reviews, preparing for Ofsted, or looking to build a clearer picture of teaching strengths and needs, this audit provides structured questions and evidence prompts to guide honest, practical evaluation.

It can also support trust leaders overseeing teaching development across schools, offering a shared framework for reviewing current approaches and shaping next steps at scale.

What if the Ofsted 2025 Inspection Framework changes after I buy this?

This audit pack is based on the best practice in schools and the structure and themes from the draft 2025 Ofsted School Inspection Toolkit. The final version is expected in September 2025. As soon as the final framework is published, we’ll review and update this resource to ensure full alignment.

If you’ve already purchased the pack, you’ll receive the updated version for free – no need to buy again.

Will the updated version be very different?

This all depends on the outcomes of the consultation but at the moment, the audit pack reflects the key areas and language in the consultation draft. However, we’ll make sure any structural or wording updates from Ofsted are carefully reflected.

Can I still use the pack now?

Yes, definitely! It’s been designed to help schools reflect, plan and take action without waiting. All the audit questions and themes are grounded in best practice and real school priorities, so you can use the pack confidently as part of ongoing self-evaluation, curriculum reviews or preparation for inspection.

Do I need to do anything to get the updated version?

No. Once the resource is updated, we’ll send you a product update email which will give you instructions to redownload. You can also log into your account on our website at any time to re-download the latest version from your order history.
